BeagleV – The first affordable RISC V Computer


A brief introduction to RISC V

RISC-V is a very new architecture being introduced in 2010 by the University of California Berkeley. Although RISCV CPU’s aren’t overly powerful (yet!) they are very power efficient and they are very open in terms of licencing. Anyone can design, manufacture and sell RISC-V CPU’s without any licencing costs.

Few RISC-V development boards and computers areavailable and they aren’t cheap – Take the HiFive Unmatched for example priced at $679 for a Quad Core CPU and 16GB DDR4 RAM.

This is where the BeagleV comes in priced at $149 for a dual core 64-bit StarFive U74 RISC-V CPU with 8GB LPDDR4 RAM it is much cheaper than the alternatives. The beagleV Was launched today and is expected to be released to the public in April 2021 likely being the first affordable RISC-V computer on the market.

  • Support DMAC, QSPI and other peripheral
  • Dedicated Audio Processing DSP and sub-system
  • 40 Pin GPIO Header (28 x GPIO, I2C, I2S, SPI, UART)
  • System boot from SD card
  • 1 x Wi-Fi 2.4GHz b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.2
  • Power with USB Type-C (5V@3A)
  • 1 x Reset button and 1 x Power Button
